Shree Krishna Janmashtami 2020 Date, Puja Timings: It is also popularly known as Janmashtami or Gokulashatami. Janmashtami is a annual Hindu festival, which celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, who is believed to be the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. It is observed on the eighth day (ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Sharavan or Bhadrapad. In 2020 that is this year, Janmashtami celebrations will begin August 11 to August 12.

It is believed, Shree Krishna born in Mathura at midnight on the eighth day of the Bhadrapada month. Immediately after his birth, his father Vasudeva Anakadundubhi took Krishna across the Yamuna river to save him from maternal uncle King Kansa (Kansa Mama) and gave him to his foster parents in Gokul, Nanda and Yashoda. The legend goes that Kansa’s sister Devaki’s eighth son was prophesied to kill the cruel king. So Kansa locked Devaki and Vasudeva in the prison and started killing their sons one by one until Krishna was born.

Krishna Janamstami Puja

Krishna puja is usually conducted at midnight. The ritualistic puja includes 16 steps which are part of the Shodashopachara puja vidhi. Here are the pooja timings of Janmashtami 2020, according to drikpanchang.com:

Janmashtami tithi- August 11 (Ashtami tithi will begin on 09:06 am on August 11 and end at 11:16 am on August 12)

Nishita (midnight) puja time – August 12, 12:21 am to 01:06 am

Dahi handi – August 12

On Janmashtami, therefore, idols of infant Krishna are bathed with Panchatatva, Milk, Sugar or Jaggery, Ghee, Honey, Curd, then new cloths are worn to the idol and placed in a cradle which is then swung. The devotees then break their fast and share foods and sweets.

कृष्ण जन्माष्टमी व्रत विधिजन्माष्टमी का व्रत सभी इच्छाएं पूर्ण करने वाला माना जाता है. उपवास की पूर्व रात्रि को हल्का भोजन करें और ब्रह्मचर्य का पालन करें. उपवास के दिन प्रातःकाल स्नानादि नित्यकर्मों से निवृत्त हो जाएं और उसके बाद सूर्य, सोम, यम, काल, संधि, भूत, पवन, दिक्‌पति, भूमि, आकाश, खेचर, अमर और ब्रह्मादि को नमस्कार कर पूर्व या उत्तर मुख बैठें. इसके बाद जल, फल, कुश और गंध लेकर संकल्प करें:ममखिलपापप्रशमनपूर्वक सर्वाभीष्ट सिद्धये
